ArcGIS Water Utility Network Deployment
Metro Consulting Associates (MCA) implemented the updated ArcGIS Utility Network for the City of Highland Park’s water infrastructure.
This deployment incorporated several unique design approaches and specialized Geographic Information System (GIS) services to ensure a robust and scalable Utility Network implementation. The team developed a customized data model to align the City’s existing asset inventory with the Esri Utility Network schema, incorporating tailored asset groups, asset types, and domain configurations specific to the City’s infrastructure. MCA leveraged in-house engineering expertise and close coordination with the field crew to implement rule-based connectivity and containment structures, accurately modeling real-world relationships between mains, junctions, devices, and service features.
Throughout the cleaning and preparation of data, our team addressed coverage locks and resolved GlobalID inconsistencies that prevented the successful execution of migration and validation tools. MCA also corrected invalid geometries such as gaps, overlaps, and self-intersecting lines in mains and service laterals, as well as disconnected features. Additionally, the team utilized Esri’s Error Inspector tool and Utility Network error documentation during topology validation to resolve errors, including missing or misconfigured connectivity and containment rules.
ArcGIS Pro version upgrades introduced temporary compatibility issues, which our team efficiently addressed by implementing vendor-recommended reinstallation of necessary components. Through careful validation, schema standardization, and iterative quality control, these challenges were successfully resolved, ensuring a stable and compliant Utility Network.
The updated asset management network allows the City to support real-time tracing, advanced analysis, and seamless integration with field and enterprise systems. ArcGIS’s modern capabilities enable improved operational efficiency, decision-making, and regulatory compliance.
